Schoolchildren for Children
Schoolchildren for Children is a new charity, set up to encourage children in the UK to take exercise while raising money for the education of vulnerable children in less developed countries, including the Ban Jae Lee School along the Tsunami coast in Thailand.
Each child raises £1 by walking, jogging or running at least a mile (in the course of an hour) as part of an organised school activity. So far more than 180 schools (that's over 51,000 children!) have signed up to participate.

50% of the money raised goes to their own school to assist with the development of extra-curricular sporting activities and 50% of the money raised will be to pay for books, materials, and school meal programmes in overseas schools, including the Ban Jae Lee School, where 151 students live in poverty and 28 are recognised as suffering from malnutrition.

Schoolchildren for Children has an overriding principle: none of the money raised by the children’s efforts goes towards administration costs. (These costs have been covered by separate sponsorship.)
Most schools will take part on 30 September 2005.
A pilot project took place in Wales in 2003. £10,000 was raised for UNICEF. Over the next few years the target is to grow the event so a million schoolchildren a year take part. The eventual goal is a contribution to the second goal of the UN Millennium Development Goals – that by 2015 all children will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling.
